Technical Tips & Information

Buying a Boiler Vs a Boiler Room

With a new year comes hopefully budget money to upgrade equipment and make improvements in your plant. Old boilers are like old cars, nice to look at but generally no where as fuel efficient as new boilers. Energy prices will continue to cycle up and down but the net effect will be higher prices over the long term.

We take the approach that you are most interested in buying a boiler room as opposed to a boiler. Installation of a new boiler involves piping, electrical, permitting, emission, inspection, insurance, operating, and service issues. You can certainly do it all yourself or hire one or more contractors to get all of these issues taken care of to meet your requirements or you can call us and let us handle the entire project.

As an example, if your boiler requirement is in excess of 10,000,000 BTUs per hour input which occurs at about 240 HP, we strongly recommend that you consider multiple boilers. Current requirements in 47 counties in Georgia require an air permit if the boiler input is 10,000,000 BTUs or higher. Current permits would make your income tax forms look very simple and can take months to secure. As a side note, be aware that these same air requirements apply to installing a used boiler or moving an existing boiler to a new location.

Boilers come in many types and price ranges with sometimes questionable claims on boiler efficiency. We offer Miura Boilers which are 85% fuel to steam efficient when installed with an economizer. Be very wary of proposals offering high efficiencies without state of the art PLC based controls and an economizer.
When you get to an evaluation of the price, consider the cost of the boilers, installation costs, and two years of fuel costs to operate the boilers. A simple issue like considering a boiler which is 5% more efficient even when it is bit more expensive is a worth while strategy.

We include full service on a new boiler for one year including parts and labor. Miura parts with few exceptions are non-proprietary and available from many local sources. Many boiler companies will offer a low ball price on the boiler and then destroy your budget with very high proprietary parts prices.

A steam system by definition is made up of the boiler room equipment, distribution piping, plant utilization of steam, and condensate return systems. With over 40 years of hands on experience in working with steam systems, we will make sure the boiler selection matches your plant requirements.

If you are planning a boiler replacement this year, consider us as a single source supplier and installer who will bring your project in on time and on budget
