Technical Tips & Information

Points to Consider in Your Boiler Room

Some points to consider regarding your boiler operations:

1. Any new boilers over 10,000,000 BTUs per hour input must have an EPA permit completed and a NOx rating of 30 ppm or less in 47 Georgia counties. Given the cost and complexity of air permits, we suggest you consider a Miura Boiler LX Series Georgia Special with an input of 9,600,000 BTUs (about 232 BHP) and a NOx rating of less than 30 ppm. If you need more than 232 BHP, consider multiple boilers as compared to the air permit process.

2. With facility floor space now worth about $120 per square foot, Miura boilers size for size require about 65% less floor space than firetube boilers. Miura Boilers can be installed in areas where a firetube boiler could not fit.
Current fire clearances for boilers for virtually all counties is 4 feet around all sides of the boiler. With no horizontal tubes, Miura Boilers do not require large spaces for maintenance.

3. “In Service Efficiency” is total BTUs consumed each month compared to total BTUs of steam energy delivered to your plant. The most efficient boiler is a cold boiler! If you are operating boilers over 25 years old and have hot standby or cycling boilers, your in service efficiency is 65% or less. A stack analyzer only tells you how well you are burning fuel and nothing about your in service efficiency. Multiple Miura Boilers with their PLC based lead lag system will provide 85% in service efficiency 24/7.

4. Operating your firetube boiler at rates much over 75-80% will insure early failure of tubes and tube sheets. Firetube boilers are not designed to cycle off and on without causing problems with the boiler. Miura Boilers are designed to run at 100% firing rates. Since full pressure is reached in less than five minutes, boilers can be turned off when not needed. A boiler operating at idle is 0% efficient since it is making no steam and will consume about 10% of its full rated fuel flow to stay warm. Remember; “the most efficient boiler is a cold boiler”.

5. Maintenance costs of a 25 year old or older boiler can easily exceed $20,000 per boiler or more. If you are faced with a major repair, take the time to consider looking at Miura Boilers. With high fuel costs, payback on a completely new state of the art boiler room can be two years or less.

We can provide you with a complete turn key state of the art boiler room including Georgia Department of labor permits, all equipment, installation, start up, inspection, training, and one years service. If boilers are on your project list, give us a call for details, information, and prices.
