Technical Tips & Information

The Most Efficient Boiler is a Boiler Not Running

What might seem like a silly headline is the heart of the Miura Boiler story. A boiler not running burns no fuel and generates no emissions.

In most steam systems, loads vary over operations during the day and certainly during evening and weekend operations. Boiler efficiency drops off as the load on a boiler drops. For most boilers the radiation loss off that large mass of metal is about 4% of the capacity of the boiler. A 10,000 lb/hr boiler will generate radiation or heat losses of about 400 lb/hr. For the same boiler at 3,000 lb/hr load, the radiation load is still 400 lb/hr but now represents a loss of 13.3%. Add this to combustion losses of about 20% and your operating efficiency is down to 67%.

As the load on a boiler drops from full capacity, the efficiency drops off significantly. Consider that you are burning large amounts of fuel just to keep the boiler hot. If the boiler begins to cycle in and out of fire, the situation is even worse due to the process of purging the boiler before it lights to prevent an explosion. Lightly loaded boilers can cost you as much as 50% of your fuel bill!

Miura uses a concept of PLC operated multiple boilers to deal with a varying load. Each boiler is 85% fuel to steam efficient due to design of the boiler, an on board local PLC , and an economizer as standard. By selecting the proper sizes of boilers to match your load changes, a master PLC control called the MI system automatically turns on individual boilers to match your load requirements. At any given time of the day. Miura boilers come up to full pressure in less than five minutes from a cold start so the ability to meet varying load changes is not a problem.

By using this concept, your fuel bills and emissions are dramatically reduced. All new boilers over 10 million BTU input require air permits. Permitting a boiler is an expensive and complex process and can now take months to complete. We suggest using multiple boilers of 230 BHP to match your load needs. This avoids air permits, cuts fuel costs and reduces emissions.
