As an example, assume a pump is delivering 40 gpm of water at 150 psig using a 5 HP motor. Converting psig of water equal 346.05'. The water power output in this example is 3.50. Based on a 5 BHP pump motor, the pump efficiency would be 70% (3.5 divided by 5).

Properly sized centrifugal pumps will typically operate in the 73-94% efficiency range. Improper pump selection can result in efficiencies in the 50% range which can increase your electrical power consumption.
