Sizing Air Lines
This is a great chart from an older Spirax Sarco technical publication that covers sizing compressed air lines from 1/2" to 12" schedule 40 pipe. The range of pressures on the chart is from 5 PSIA to 400 PSIG. To select, or look at, line size options you will need the air flow rate in cubic feet per minute, and the line pressure.

The example shown is to select the line size for 1000 cubic feet per minute of air flow at 100 PSIG. As shown by the dash lines--

1. Step 1 is entering the chart from the right hand vertical axis at the required air flow and intersecting the air pressure on the top scale.
2. Draw a line at the intersection point which is parallel to the diagonal line on the chart.
3. From the left hand vertical scale read the pressure drop per 100ft on the bottom scale. In the example shown a 4" line will yield a pressure drop of .225 PSIG per 100ft.

What is great about this chart is you can look at other line size options if you are trying to add capacity to existing lines.
